Sullivan County press release

Monticello, NY – Due to the ongoing impacts of Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms, Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek has extended the State of Emergency for parts of Sullivan County through 5 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 18, 2018.

A State of Emergency is issued under Article 2B of New York State Executive Law and in this case applies to the townships of Bethel, Cochecton, Forestburgh, Highland and Tusten. Note that after 5 p.m. tonight, the declaration will no longer include the Town of Lumberland, based on conversations with the involved town's supervisor.

The declaration was extended in the five townships because of the ongoing impacts of downed limbs and wires. Some of these areas may not see power restored until Sunday or even later.

“The southern portion of the County was hit very hard, with near-hurricane-force winds. Tree and wire damage is extensive, and in some cases the destruction is requiring the wholesale replacement – not repair – of utility poles and infrastructure,” said Potosek. “Highland officials tell me the entire town is in the dark, while in Tusten, we’ve counted close to 80 buildings that have suffered some sort of tree damage. So I have extended the State of Emergency in these parts of Sullivan County to ensure the safety of County residents.”

There are no travel restrictions associated with this declaration, but people are again asked to use caution and refrain from unnecessary travel in the affected areas.

County offices will be open for business as usual tomorrow, as will the County’s Emergency Operations Center. The Center continues to coordinate efforts to restore electricity, reopen roads, clean up debris, and distribute dry ice and water from NYSEG and Orange & Rockland Utilities.

Dry ice and water are anticipated to be available tomorrow at the same locations they were distributed today, so long as supplies last:

  • Monticello Firehouse (Richardson Avenue)
  • Fallsburg Police Station (Railroad Avenue, South Fallsburg)
  • Callicoon Center Firehouse (Gulf Road)
  • Highland Town Hall (Proctor Road, Eldred)
  • White Lake Firehouse (Route 17B)
  • Tusten Town Hall (Bridge Street, Narrowsburg)
  • Forestburgh Firehouse (Route 42)
  • Lumberland Town Hall (Proctor Road, Glen Spey)
  • Mamakating Town Hall (Route 209, Wurtsboro)

County residents are welcome to dispose of spoiled household food at no cost at County-operated transfer stations through this weekend. Stations will be open between 7:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on the following days:

  • Friday, May 18: Monticello
  • Saturday, May 19: Monticello, Rockland, Highland and Western Sullivan
  • Sunday, May 20: Ferndale and Mamakating

Further updates will be posted on the Sullivan County website, www.co.sullivan.ny.us, and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/sullivancountygov, along with local media.
