PennDot to stop printing registration stickers
HARRISBURG, PA — Beginning on January 1, 2017, residents who renew their vehicle registration will no longer be required to affix a registration sticker to the vehicle.
In a move that is expected to save PennDot $3 million a year in production and mailing costs, the department will no longer produce the stickers. Drivers are not required to scrape off or remove the old stickers but will be expected to produce a registration card for the vehicle if stopped by a law enforcement official.
Also beginning in the new year, drivers who renew their registration online will have the opportunity to print out a new registration card.
Some police departments around the state are concerned about the change because their budget doesn’t allow many of them to buy license-plate reader technology, which costs about $14,000 per police vehicle to install.
