Orange County Democrats endorse Metzger

ORANGE COUNTY, NY — The Orange County Democratic Committee on May 30 voted to endorse Jen Metzger in the race to become the Democratic candidate to run for the seat held by the departing Republican Sen. John Bonacic.

Metzger, a member of the Rosendale Town Council and director of the nonprofit organization Citizens for Local Power, is running against Pramilla Malick, an alternative energy activist who has fought against the Minisink Compressor Station and the Corporate Power Ventures (CPV) power plant.

Metzger won about 109 of the 150 committee members who voted. She told the gathering, “We can have strong public schools and fix the way they are funded. We can guarantee everyone access to the healthcare they need. We can build a clean-energy economy so that projects like CPV don’t keep coming back. And we can have a government that truly represents us... Let’s build a lasting progressive movement in the Hudson Valley that speaks to the real needs of the people who live here, and to the health of our environment.”

Malick issued a statement criticizing the governor. She wrote, “I would like to congratulate the real winner of this endorsement, King Andrew Cuomo (by proxy Jen Metzger).

“This endorsement is further proof that our local party officials are out of touch, and beholden to Cuomo. This process was a selection not an election.

“In 2016 I had the endorsement of the county committee and lost. This year it will be the opposite.”

The primary election for state offices is September 13. The winner of the primary will face Republican Annie Rabbitt, who is serving a second term as Orange County Clerk, and has previously served in the state Assembly.
