Lake community considers shooting range

LACKAWAXEN, PA — Fawn Lake Forest, a private residential community in Lackawaxen Township, is considering adding a sportsman’s club to the community, possibly with a shooting range.

John Gazzani, president of the Fawn Lake Forest Community Association (FLFA), responded to a query from The River Reporter with an email laying out the situation. He wrote, “As our community grows, the board of directors receives requests from our residents to add amenities. Two years ago we installed a brand new fitness center in our clubhouse with over $50,000 worth of new equipment.

“We have also recently had requests for a dog park, mini-golf course and, as you already know, a sportsman’s club. The sportsman’s club would be for FLFA residents only and would include a small 25-yard gun range and an archery range. Participation would require completion of NRA-approved safety and training classes offered by trained volunteers. However, like any amenity, our board needs to consider the impact on the community, use of the amenity, safety, maintenance, liability, cost to build, cost to operate, cost to insure and environmental impact. We have a dedicated sportsman’s club committee looking into all of these factors.”

At least one resident thinks a gun range in the community is a “terrible idea.” Property owner Marcia Nehemiah (who formerly wrote a column for this newspaper) wrote a letter to Gazzani and township officials saying, “It is completely ill-advised to site an outdoor gun range on land within 100-200 feet of homes and near adjacent horse-riding and hiking trails. The dangers are obvious.” Nehemiah said that safety issues that would come with a gun range would also have a negative impact on property values in the community.

Gazzani said that no decision has yet been made about the issue and, “At some point, in the due diligence process, a survey will be taken to determine the wishes of the majority of residents.”
