ELDRED, NY — When more than 100 people gather in a small hamlet like Eldred, it usually means that they have gathered with a purpose. Memorial Day 2019 was no exception.

They joined American Legion Post 1363 and VFW Post 6427 members, local dignitaries and members of the clergy to reflect and honor the more than one million members of the military that have given their lives in the more than 70 wars and conflicts that have been waged since the inception of the Republic.

VFW Post Commander Pete Carmeci served as master of ceremonies at the Heroes Park Memorial Garden outside of the Highland Town Hall. Sharing the podium with him were Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst of the Pond Eddy Methodist Church, a representative from Rep. Aileen Gunther’s office, Richard Vandevelde from the American Legion and Rev. Susan Storms of the Eldred Congregational Church.

Prayers were said and tributes were made as the people took time from a glorious weekend filled with sunshine to pay their respects. A reception of cake and coffee was held in the Town Hall after the brief ceremony, which concluded with a three-gun salute and the playing of Taps by Gary Skotch.
