WALLKILL RIVER, NY — Short-eared owls, winter migrants from Canada, can be spotted from late afternoon to just after sunset as they come out to hunt for small rodents. They usually appear flying low, showing white wings with black crescents past the elbow. “This owl flew close but had a bright sunset-lit sky as a background,” reported photographer Scott Rando.
