Narrowsburg News 11/5/18
Gary Amerbach recently departed the Tusten Building Department after more than seven years as the town’s code enforcement officer. I worked with him on several projects to improve safety and housing conditions in the Luxton Lake community over the years, and I wish him well in his new endeavors. Jim Crowley has taken over the reins of what is often a thankless job. The duties of the code enforcement officer include not only monitoring and enforcing the town’s zoning laws but also making sure contractors and homeowners adhere to New York State energy and building codes. As one building inspector said to me, “Our job is to make sure your house doesn’t kill you.”
From the looks of Narrowsburg’s real estate market, Mr. Crowley will be a busy guy. Every builder and carpenter I know is booked up with work, whether it’s renovating a room in a house or building a house from the ground up. In the past week, two homes sold in the Luxton Lake community after being on the market for many years. From what I see, it’s not just newcomers buying homes in Narrowsburg, but also local residents who are investing in additional properties to fix up and flip, or else offer them for rent.
The Town of Tusten is currently looking for individuals to fill open seats on the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA). The ZBA’s responsibility is to review applications and hear cases where the code enforcer or planning board has made a decision that the applicant would like to appeal. I sat on this board for several years, and it is worthwhile for anyone who is interested in local civic duty. Meetings occur on the first Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. If interested in serving on the ZBA or nominating someone to serve, contact the Town of Tusten clerk at 845/252-7146 or email@example.com.
There is a rare opportunity for entrepreneurs to snatch up business space on Narrowsburg’s Main Street, as I hear that two storefronts are becoming available: one at 8 Main and the other at 22 Main. Check flyers in the windows for details and contact information.
