William Robert Alber passed away after a brief illness on Monday, March 21, 2011. He was 79.

He was born November 27, 1931.

He was a resident of Callicoon, NY for over 30 years. William proudly served his country as an army staff sergeant in the Korean War from January 29, 1952 thru January 12, 1954. William owned and operated a small business in Glendale, NY for 34 years. He enjoyed flying small aircrafts for many years at Sullivan County Airport. William will be dearly missed by many family members as well as his dear friends.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arlene Alber; daughters Patricia Tabacco and Arlene McKenna; and a son William John Alber.

A memorial service was held at Flinch and Bruns, 34th Hempstead Avenue, Lynbrook, NY on Sunday, March 27, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Burial was on Monday, March 28, at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, with full military honors.


Elizabeth J. “Betty” Hawker of Narrowsburg, NY, a longtime resident of the area, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Clarence and Johanna Van Beeck Winchell, she was born November 22, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ.

Betty was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg. She served as Tusten Town Clerk from 1991 to 1999. She was a charter member of Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a member of Tusten Historical Society and a volunteer for the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry.

Survivors include sons Arthur Hawker and wife Patricia of Narrowsburg and William Hawker and wife Sachiyo of Concord, CA; daughter Kathryn Anderson and husband Richard of Annapolis, MD; grandchildren Laura Christ and husband Peter of San Antonio, TX, Jennifer Hawker of Scranton, PA, Megan Hawker of San Diego, CA, Joseph Hawker of Toronto, Canada and Jun Hawker of Concord, CA.

Betty is predeceased by husband Searle Alfred Hawker; and brothers William and Richard Winchell.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, March 31 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main St., Narrowsburg, NY 12764. Funeral services will be held April 1 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating.

Cremation will follow at Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald, PA. Burial of the cremains will be in Glen Cove Cemetary, Narrowsburg.

Mabel W. Huebner of Narrowsburg, NY, a longtime resident of the area, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center, Honesdale, PA. She was 99.

The daughter of the late Harry and Mabel Whitaker Covart, she was born in Glen Spey, NY on November 13, 1911.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg. She was a member of Tusten Senior Citizens Club for over 20 years, and volunteered for the office of aging meals-on-wheels program. She was the former secretary of the Tusten Republican Club.

A family statement reads, in part: “Mabel was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She had a full life, living just short of a full century. She was devoted to her family and instilled great values. She will be greatly missed.”

She is survived by sons Robert Huebner and wife Joan of Monticello, NY, Ralph Huebner and wife Irmgard of Beach Lake, PA, Kenneth Huebner and wife Carol of Deltona, FL and Charles Huebner and wife Karyn of Cameron Park, CA; 15 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Huebner, who passed away back in 1973.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg.

Marie A. Miller of Rowland, PA, a longtime resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, March 13 at home. She was 83.

The daughter of the late Edward and Stella Yackevicz Bortcavage, she was born September 13, 1927 in Eynon, PA.

She was married for 54 years to Joseph A. Miller, who survives.

A family statement reads: “Marie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a big part of the family and she will be truly missed.”

She is also survived by son Joseph A. Miller Jr. and wife Janet; daughter Maureen Moore and husband Joseph; grandsons Joseph and Daniel Miller and Joseph Moore; granddaughters Jennifer and Jade Moore; sister Helen Jaszczult; goddaughter Eileen Bridges; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, March 17 at St. Ann’s R.C. Church in Shohola, PA, with Father Thomas Major officiating. Christian burial followed in the parish cemetery.
