MARTHA “SHIRLEY” VANNATTA HILLER

DAMASCUS, PA — Martha “Shirley” Vannatta Hiller, a retired clerk at Kmart, a former employee of Honesdale National Bank and lifelong resident of the area, died Friday, February 17, 2006 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale. She was 70.

The daughter of the late Harold and Mary Helen Card Vannatta, she was born November 26, 1935, in Milanville.

Hiller was a graduate of the Damascus High School class of 1953. She was a former member of Eastern Star and a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Association of Honesdale. A family statement reads: “Shirley was a great sister. She enjoyed children and especially loved her nieces and nephews. She loved and lived country music and was an avid lover of animals. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include three brothers, Norman Vannatta and his wife Ruby of Summerton, SC; John Vannatta and his wife Patricia of Honesdale; and Andrew Vannatta and his wife Gabriel of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Betty Hartman and her husband Orvis of Honesdale and Mary Priebe and her husband Richard of Damascus; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 21 at Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg, NY. Rev. Deborah Vendermark Dailey officiated.

Burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery in Damascus.

Donations may be made to the Damascus Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the donors’ choice.


MARTIN ANTHONY MCDONOUGH, JR

MATAMORAS, PA — Martin Anthony McDonough, Jr., a resident of Matamoras, died Thursday, February 16 in Sparrowbush, NY. He was 19.

The son of Martin A. McDonough, Sr. and Lynn A. Nixon, he was born August 5, 1986 in Newton, NJ.

McDonough was a student at Sussex County Community College. He was a member of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Matamoras, PA.

A family statement reads: “Martin was an avid body builder at Tri-State Health and Fitness and a great outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing were his passion.”

He is survived by his father, Martin A. McDonough, Sr. and his wife Suzanne of Matamoras; his mother, Lynn A. Nixon of Hackensack, NJ; a brother, Sky McDonough of Franklin, NH; his maternal grandmother, Jessie Nixon of Abesecon, NJ; his paternal grandparents, John and Betty McDonough of Montague, NJ; six uncles; two aunts; and eight cousins.

Services were held on Monday, February 20 with a prayer service at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis, NY. A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Matamoras with the Reverend August A. Ricciardi officiating. Cremation was at H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate contributions toward Martin’s funeral expenses.


JERRY F. NEWELL

WESTFALL TOWNSHIP, PA — Jerry F. Newell, a resident of Westfall Township, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at home. He was 71.

The son of the late Frank and Alice Carter Newell, he was born March 1, 1934 in New Haven, CT.

Newell was a retired self-employed exterminator and a member of the National American Legion and a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. He was married to the late Evelyn Arleth Newell.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry and his wife Diane of Walden, and Otto and his wife Jeanne of Matamoras; three daughters, Carolyn Polera and her husband Frank of Montgomery, Darlene Panagulis and her husband Thomas of Montgomery and Melodie Leon and her husband Manuel of Narrowsburg, NY; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass was celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church in Milford on Saturday, February 18, 2006 with the Reverend Gerald Mullally officiating.

Interment will be in a Veteran’s National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

RUTH F. (DOUGLASS) RICKER

MILFORD, PA — Ruth F. (Douglass) Ricker, a resident of Milford and a former resident of Pompton Lakes, NJ, died Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Milford Valley Convalescent Home. She was 95.

Born in Wanaque, NJ, she lived in Pompton Lakes, NJ before moving to Sparrowbush, NY and more recently Milford.

Ricker was a homemaker. She was a past member of Daughters of America in Pompton Lakes.

She is survived by two sons, Floyd, Jr. of Sparrowbush, NY and Richard of Waterford, MI; two daughters, Doris Hoefgen and Janet Lasslett, both of Sparrowbush, NY; two brothers, Wallace Douglass of Butler, NJ and Howard Douglass of Port Richie, FL; two sisters, Ora Ferralasco of Pompton Lakes, NJ and Betty Romaine of Spring Hill, FL; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Ricker Sr. in 1983.

Services were held on Wednesday, February 22 at the Richards Funeral Home in Riverdale, NJ.

Interment will be at Pompton Reformed Cemetery in Pompton Lakes, NJ.


JOYCE SCHMIDT

YOUNGSVILLE, NY — Joyce Schmidt, a resident of Youngsville, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 70.

The daughter of Walter and Lola Shook Williams, she was born April 28, 1935 in Fremont Center.

Schmidt was married to Glenn J. Schmidt. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband; four sons, Lyle of Obernburg, Daniel of Youngsville, Dale of Callicoon and Troy of Youngsville; two sisters, Lola Crown of Damascus, PA and Edith Bellamy of Lake Ariel, PA; two brothers, Walter Williams of Damascus, PA and Charles Williams of Honesdale, PA; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Monday, February 20 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

SCOTT THOMAS SMITH

SMALLWOOD, NY — Scott Thomas Smith of Smallwood passed away Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. He was 49.

Smith, a native of River Vale, NJ, was the son of the late Walter Sidney Smith and Geraldine Bohne Smith of Concord, NC, formerly of Machipongo, VA.

Smith was a sporting goods representative for Mike Wieck Sales.

Other than his mother, Smith is survived by a fiancee, Genalyn Maquiling; a brother, Bruce A. Smith and his wife Lisa of Princeton, NJ; a sister, Karen Smith Mitchell and her husband Robert of Concord, NC; and four nieces and a nephew.

A funeral mass was conducted on Friday, February 17 from St. Charles Catholic Church with Father J. Michael Vreslin officiating.

Entombment followed in St. Charles Catholic Church Columbarium.
