Looking Back

Elvira Kennedy Brownscombe was born in 1809 to David and Rhoda Stearns Kennedy in Mt. Pleasant Township, Wayne County. David Kennedy’s father, David Sr., and wife Rhoda (Tingley) had emigrated from Tolland County, CT in 1794, among the very earliest settlers in the area.

Looking Back

Samuel W. Pennypacker was governor of Pennsylvania in 1903 when the Wayne Hatchery #4 was built in Pleasant Mount. Wayne Hatchery #4 originally sat on 14 acres of property donated by Alison B. Sterling. The major water source is the Lackawaxen River via Beaver Meadows Reservoir (Belmont Lake), obtained in 1917.

Tai chi in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — Sifu Master Christopher Lee will offer instruction in traditional long-form Wu-style tai chi at the Honesdale YMCA beginning November 1. Classes will also include training in Qi Gong, supplemental breathing exercises that enhance the tai chi experience.

Art grants for individuals

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Individual artists living in Sullivan County are invited to apply for the 2017 Artists in the Community Decentralization grant (AIC), administered by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and funded by New York State Council on the Arts. The deadline is Friday, December 2.

Historic Preservation Awards ceremony

HONESDALE, PA — The 2016 recipients of the Wayne County Historical Society’s (WCHS) 2016 Historic Preservation Award are Rudy and Francine Schemitz, Kim Erickson and Sheila Weller. To celebrate their work, a Historic Preservation Awards ceremony will be held at the WCHS Main Museum, 810 Main St., on Saturday, October 22, at 5 p.m.
