A friend recently shared some high-tunnel greens with me. Vegetables are a joyous taste of soil and sun. If you’re looking for the best steak in town, I’m* not the columnist to ask, but in the spirit of our local growing season, here’s a little lunching guide for H’dale, written by a vegetarian whose hunger has already been satiated by chips and is therefore able to offer an objective opinion.

Category One: Sandwiches

Places: Camp Umpy’s and Alley Whey Eatery.

Tips: Ask for your sandwich scoobied at Camp Umpy’s. At Alley Whey, they’ll ask if you want a pickle. The answer is yes.

Recommendations: An Anthill Scoobied at Ump’s and a Summer Blues at the Whey.

Category Two: Get Downs

Places: Nature’s Grace and Yoga International Café.

Tips: Look for the specials. Both menus regularly experiment with new items and rotating favorites. Everything is heartwarming and generously served.

Recommendations: Mock crab cakes at Nature’s Grace and a veggie Reuben at the Yoga Café.

Category Three: Alley Nook

Place: Bà & Me.

Tips: Eat outside in the patio and bring a friend.

Recommendations: Mushroom Tacos. Also, Vietnamese iced coffee, no matter what food you order.

Looking beyond lunch... say, for small bites, wine and a happening-for-a-cause instead? Try the Wayne County Public Library’s In Good Taste event on Friday, April 26. There will be wine and food pairings, a silent auction, people in Hawaiian shirts and your neighborhood library friends, starting the weekend together in the Greater Honesdale area’s iconic, non-traditional, event space: the emptied-out, dealership showroom of venue host Wayne County Ford.

That kinda’ hits all the marks, doesn’t it? Plus, it’s the library we’re talking about here. An extremely support-worthy institution. If there’s a place to drink wine on April’s final Friday, this would be that place. Visit the library in Honesdale for advance tickets.

Then, take Saturday off in preparation for the Wayne County Canoe Classic on Sunday, April 28. You can team up for a partner adventure or solo paddle the nine miles on the Dyberry Creek and Lackawaxen River. From the Wayne County Fairgrounds, through downtown Honesdale and to White Mills, people will cheer you on from bridges along the way. Register for the Canoe Classic online at the Honesdale Area Jaycees website. Canoe and kayak rentals are available from Sawmill Cycles.

The following is the Honesdale Borough Dispatch from the April council meeting: painting of the crosswalks officially in the planning stages.
