LONG POND, PA — Thousands of children from across the country have been busy beading over the past four months to help create the longest glass beaded necklace in the world. The official measuring event will take place on Wednesday, October 3 at Pocono Raceway. The necklace will be laid out and wrapped around the seven-mile-plus track.
The event helps to create awareness and funding for Lonakana. Lonakana, which means “gift from heaven,” is a planned retreat center located in Northeast PA that will serve women and children recovering from cancer to help rejuvenate their spirits and make loving and lasting memories with their families and friends. There is never a cost to the guests.
The program is created by Maryann Corey and her husband Richard. They provide a one-on-one bedside/chairside beading program that creates masterpieces and smiles. To help fund it and create awareness they also created Bloom, a store that sells beaded products. There are currently two Bloom stores open, one at the corner of 10th and Main Street in Honesdale, with more planned.
When the official measurement is documented, the necklace will be cut into 24-inch love beads. They will be available for purchase online and in the gift shop for a donation of $20. For more information email beadlady6@gmail.com or visit www.lonakana.org.
