Antrim Lodge, engaged in second restoration, solicits letters of support for funding application

ROSCOE, NY — The legendary Antrim Lodge has submitted a Consolidated Funding Application to the Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council to complete the reconstruction of the 127-year-old facility, which was severely damaged by a combination of flooding and fire in the 2004-2006 period. The lodge is seeking letters of support from the public for its application, with a deadline of Friday, July 27.

Established in 1890 as a boarding house, The Antrim Lodge subsequently became a combined inn, restaurant and bar. Popular with sportsmen throughout its history, it was a favorite gathering place for anglers, and the home of legends like that of the two-headed trout, Beamoc, who couldn't decide whether to swim towards the Beaverkill or the Willowemoc from their confluence at Junction Pool. Author Ed Van Put wrote, "It was a famous watering hole for anglers who often stood three and four deep waiting for a drink to take away the river's chill. At the bar, stories were told of fish caught and lost, and big trout tended to increase in size in proportion to the number of drinks consumed."

The lodge closed in 1994, but a restoration commenced in 2004-2006. Unfortunately, that effort was stymied by flooding in 2004 and again in 2005, followed by a fire in July of 2006 that substantially destroyed it.

The current owners have already started another restoration, doing some reframing and landscaping and increasing the extent of the grounds, but funds are needed to complete the work, and they are seeking letters from the public to support their funding application.

Letters should be addressed to Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council, attention of Dennis Murray, PhD, 33 Airport Center Drive, #201, New Windsor, NY, 12553, and emailed to diane@antrimlodge.com.
