Professor George W. Twitmyer became supervising principal of Honesdale’s schools in 1884. Born in Center County, PA in 1849, he graduated from the Central Normal School and started teaching at the age of 19. He served as principal of McEwenville Academy, Watsontown public schools and Honesdale for 12 years, resigning in 1896 to become superintendent of Bethlehem Public Schools.

During his tenure in Honesdale, Professor Twitmyer enriched the collections in school libraries and oversaw the construction of a new school on 11th Street. After his move to Bethlehem, he survived an accusation of showing partiality to one of his sons so that the boy would be first in his graduating class. He was fully vindicated by the board of education. Shortly after this incident he became superintendent of schools in Wilmington, DE, where he died February 21, 1914 at the age of 54.

From the collection of the Wayne County Historical Society, 810 Main St., Honesdale. The museum and research library are open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. and museum only 12 noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
