New York State’s history is rich with stories of fishermen. However, fishing in New York was not always as regulated as it is today.

The Fisheries, Game and Forest Commission was created in 1895 to establish guidelines for game and fish activity, the first organization to take responsibility for such regulations in New York. In 1911, the commission changed its name to the Conservation Department. This would go on to become the foundation of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

As New York welcomes the start of the 2018 fishing season, fishermen will take part in a tradition passed down from generations. Long Eddy resident Craig English continues to fish in the footsteps of his great-grandfather Solon LaValley (pictured from the early 1900s).

The Basket Historical Society preserves and presents the history of the Upper Delaware area. If you are interested in becoming a member or finding out more contact us at baskethistsociety@gmail.com.
