Looking Back 12/28
This photograph of the Pond Eddy Bridge was taken by Tom Kane for our December 18, 2003 paper, and accompanied an article on a familiar topic: controversy over the replacement or reconstruction of the bridge. At that time, the Shohola Township Supervisors had just passed a unanimous resolution to send a letter to the Interstate Bridge Commission at PennDOT, urging that the Pond Eddy bridge construction begin soon. But, the article reported, “PennDOT is not optimistic about beginning a new Pond Eddy construction in 2004. “It will be more like 2005,” said Bill Lesek, assistant bridge engineer at PennDOT.
He was only 11 years off—and the bridge is still under construction. The controversy regarding the replacement of the historic structure is likely to last even longer.
