The Jeffersonville Mountain Climbers and Snowmobile Club is pictured stopping for lunch (mid ‘70s), at Sam & Al’s on Route 52. Cochecton Preservation Socity historian Arthur Hassis remembers this day. When they all settled in, there were 62 machines parked outside. Their club was formed in 1970 to promote safe and pleasurable snow mobiling.

Many folks remember this as Kennedy’s Corner, where Gilbert’s, Sam & Al’s and Fiddler’s III were located. Sam & Al’s was owned and operated by Alvin and Sandy Grund. Sandy sang with the Belltones, a barbershop quartet and with Mickey Barnett’s pop group between 1977 and 1994. The popular tavern hosted many events: PTA Sock Hop, dinner dances and political rallies to name a few, in the huge hall. I wonder if the current residents hear the music beat and dancing feet lingering on! If you have photos of past events to share please call 845/932-8104 or email cps12726@gmail.com.

The Cochecton Preservation Society meets the first Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m. at the Erie Depot, 8537 Rte. 97, Cochecton. Free with refreshments. Visit cochectonpreservationsociety.com, email cps12726@gmail.com, or call 845/932-8104. Tours by appointment.
