HONESDALE, PA — The annual free book swap, held at the Wayne County Park Street Complex to highlight American Recycles Day November 17 was a success, volunteers reported.
The cafeteria in the Park Street Complex was transformed into a book bonanza, welcoming more than 650 swappers from Wayne and its neighboring counties. Sponsors, including the Wayne County Bar Association and the Frey-Fetsock Funeral Home, helped to rehome at least half of the donated books and ship a 3,200 pound donation to support global literacy efforts. The Subaru Ambassador program provided free reusable bags and other giveaways. The rules of the day were simple: take and bring as many books as you want. More than 20,000 books were donated this year, 4,000 more than the year prior. More than 11,000 books were taken from the swap this year.
“Our volunteers deserve a tremendous round of applause for their commitment,” said Jenna Mauder, the event’s coordinator. “They persevered through a foot of snow, that couldn’t even stop us from receiving a record-breaking number of books.”
Mauder’s organization, NaturED and the non-profit group Sustainable Energy Education and Development Support [SEEDS] were the hosting organizations. NaturED, a group of environmental educators, assists area organizations and businesses with environmental programs and events.
