NARROWSBURG, NY — The Two Rivers Zen Community will host “Oshogatsu: The Ringing of 108 Bells” on New Year’s Eve from 7:30 to 9 p.m. All are welcome to join in this purification rite that encourages a spiritual fresh start for the coming year. The event is free and will be held at the zendo, 76 Main St., on the second floor. Donations will be accepted.
Oshogatsu is the Japanese Buddhist New Year’s Eve custom through which participants banish the “108 troublesome desires of human-kind” and begin the New Year afresh. At each of the 108 strikings of the bell, we will intone the Bonshõ chant for peace, renewal and forgiveness: “May the sounding of this bell dispel the trials and tribulations that plague all beings.”
Register for the event at tworiv erszen.org/oshogatsu or email chugai108@gmail.com.
