October Mill Day at Joel Mill

Posted

EQUINUNK, PA — Saturday, October 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be this year’s last opportunity to visit the historic Joel Hill water-powered Sawmill in Equinunk. The old mill is operated in much the same manner as it was in the late 1800s, when it was built. It has operated nearly continuously since that time. Visitors can observe the actual sawing process and take a free tour of the mill, which is now operated by volunteers from the Equinunk Historical Society, but only on certain days of the year.

The October Mill Day is one of the best times to visit: days are crisp, the fall colors of the trees are reflected in the calm waters of the mill pond, and it is traditionally cider and doughnuts day. Additionally, the new Thomas Cleveland Museum of Industrial Age Manufacturing Equipment will also be open. Volunteers are restoring the huge, belt-driven pieces of machinery to operating condition.

The sawmill is located off Route 191 south of Lookout. Watch for signs near Creek Road. Take Creek to the end, turn right and immediately left. The sawmill is on the left.  Call 570/224-6722 for information and directions.
