MILFORD, PA — The Black Bear Film Festival returns to Milford this weekend, kicking off with an opening-night gala on Friday, October 19 at 6 p.m. behind the Hotel Fauchere, featuring a preview of a silent auction and the artful bear auction. Special guests Jane Alexander and Lorna Luft will be present, and the classic movie “The Great White Hope” will be screened at 8 p.m. at the Milford Theatre, 114 E. Catherine St.
Movies will be shown at the Milford Theatre throughout the weekend, among them an animated fantasy-adventure (“Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” Saturday at 9 a.m.), a documentary on Gifford Pinchot’s conservation philosophy (11:30 a.m.), “The Hero,” starring Sam Elliot, an official 2017 Sundance and SXSW Selection (7 p.m.). There’ll also be some live discussion, like a session in which singer/actress/author Lorna Luft will join author and film historian John DiLeo for a chat about her new book, “A Star Is Born and the Film That Got Away,” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and a talk with “Starfish” writer/director Shira Levin and DeLeo following the screening of that film.
Among the Sunday films will be “Starfish,” 10 a.m. a family drama set against the background of a New England shoreline town, and a documentary on the Karen Ann Quinlan case.
Film Salon I and Film Salon II will also host showings. Salon I is at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 321 5th St. Among the films shown there will be the TriVersity documentary “Rainbow Ending: Making it Better Now,” on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Film Salon II is at the Milford Public Library, 119 East Harford St. Tickets are free, but a donation is requested. Films there will kick off on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. with a documentary titled “My Life, My Story, My Tourettes.”
