A musical twist on the life of Edgar Allan Poe
SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will be staging a unique and wildly theatrical musical, “Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe,” starting on Friday, August 10 and running through August 19 at the Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg. The show combines haunting music and poetic storytelling to chronicle the fascinating life of the iconic American writer.
Dawn Perneszi is the director, with musical direction by Leon Hilfstein. The cast includes Shawn Bailey, Josh Rosengrant, Kristopher Rosengrant, Harold Tighe, Heather Strauss, Amber Schmidt, Mekayla Perneszi, Ed Berens, Joe Guidone, Lynne Porter, Cole Phillips, Alexandria Porter, Hannah Veety and Keith Prince.
The play weaves many of Poe’s more famous stories into the narrative of Poe’s life. A ticking clock inspires “The Pit and the Pendulum,” a once beloved pet is transformed into “The Black Cat,” the eccentricities of his foster mother inspire “The Imp of the Perverse.” The New York Theater Guide wrote, “Sometimes trochaic octameter, sometimes prose... there we were lapping it up. Because it was compelling. There was, in Poe’s work, something revealed about the man himself. We were reading Poe himself as well as his stories.”
The production is being sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and by Eileen and Ivan Kalter.
