Forage Space: A new setting for art in Narrowsburg

NARROWSBURG NY — In 2017, after almost 10 years as an award-winning venue across Philadelphia and Scranton, the Forage Space Art Gallery settled into Narrowsburg to provide a new outlet for artists in the region and beyond. Offering art for exhibit and sale on a monthly rotation, the gallery has since become a valuable addition to the region’s robust artistic landscape.

“We exhibit artists from all over,” says Leigh Slingluff, who owns and curates Forage Space with her husband Jonathan. “We show artists [whom] we stand behind. They don’t have to be local, or they can be local… We try to keep it fresh… But we have a big graffiti background. When we were in Philadelphia, we showed a lot of New York City graffiti artists… but it doesn’t have to be graffiti artists. It’s kind of an eclectic mix that we show. It’s not one style.”

Indeed, along with works from that month’s featured artists, sculptures and other artistic curios can be found in the small, inviting gallery. Forage Space also plays host to other forms of art; after being approached by Karen Morris, Forage Space hosted a Poetry First Sundays event on June 3, featuring readings by Mary Greene and Joanna Sit. “It gets more eyeballs on the artwork, which is nice,” says Slingluff. “And we can provide the space for them, so it’s a win-win.”

That dual sense of art and community is an important one to Forage Space: Slingluff is delighted by the warm reception that the community has given them in their first year. “When we were working on this space… we met a lot of [local] owners,” she says. “And then, once we opened, we pretty much met everybody. It’s nice to just wave to somebody—the business owners, you know you’re in the same boat as them… It’s nice to be in a community that supports you… The space is very welcoming, we’re happy with it.”

Forage Space is located at 144 Main St. in Narrowsburg, and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Future exhibits include the works of Shawn Beeks (opening June 16, 4 to 8 p.m.). Lori Nelson (July 14, 4 to 8 p.m.) and Dan Santoro (August 11, 4 to 8 p.m.).
