The case of the miniature murder mystery

...and then there was fun

When she called to say that “something terrible had happened at the house,” I jumped in the car and got there as fast as I could. “What is it? What’s wrong?” I shouted, pounding on the door, which creaked open, shedding light on the horrific scene before me. “It’s the dollhouse,” Gayle said, ushering me in. “There’s been a murder.”

Once I calmed down and began to survey the scene, I ascertained that she had decided to celebrate Halloween by creating a fantastical house of horrors, replete with ransacked drawers, pots in the kitchen swinging from their hooks, stabbings and suffocations, bloody knives and guns. “I’ve been working on it here and there,” she said of the dollhouse she had inherited from her mom, “for about a year. I’ve always liked miniatures and mysteries, so this has been really fun.” On the exterior of the turn-of-the 20th century dollhouse, everything seems normal, even though there is a tiny man leaving in a hurry…

“Yeah, I made the tissue box, lamps and skylight,” Gayle said, pointing out details in the attic. “And the frame around the mirror in the dressing room?” she chuckled. “It’s an old bracelet. Check out the bathroom,” she said, which boasts a hand-made shower stall, including the fixtures and clothing on the hooks.

The attention to detail in Gayle’s haunting work of art is amusing as well, and she was quick to point out the ugly clothing on the dead guy in the living room. “I think he was shot just for having bad taste.” Homemade mice, credit cards, and pictures on the walls are but some of the hidden treasures to be found throughout.
