All walks of life at the Callicoon Art Walk

Just as the hype of summer is winding down, the lure of autumn activities is ramping up. The Callicoon Art Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 6 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. The event is held annually and hosts a plethora of local artists and musicians. It is sponsored by the Callicoon Business Association and features, as the name would suggest, various mediums of art, scattered throughout the main hamlet of Callicoon, hence the “walk.” With this event, the business association seeks to draw attention to the growing music and art scene in the hamlet of Callicoon and surrounding towns.

Throughout the day there will be live music, short-film screenings at the Callicoon Theater and even video and art installations on display throughout town. Performances by Lava, and Catskill Dance Company will be just some of the live performances to be held at the Callicoon train station depot, which, in addition to providing a setting for many artists and performers, will serve as the central hub for all of the day’s activities. The NACL streets troupe will perform its newest production, “El Viento,” Spanish for “the wind.” The production showcases immigration and the crossing of borders. The production is a musical and is performed on stilts by the actors. Other performance artists will include Captain Magic, Banjo Don and Shlomo Franklin. Main stage events start at 12 noon.

Also at 12 noon, visitors who are film aficionados can head to the Callicoon Theater to enjoy short films and works by filmmakers Lisa Crafts, Michel Negroponte, Xeth Feinberg, Tessa Hughes-Freeland and Guy Madden, to name a few.

New to the event this year is a pub crawl beginning at 5 p.m., and featuring the Callicoon Brewing Company, Mathew’s on Main, Peppinos and The Western. These locations will offer tastings of various brews, ciders and distilled beverages from several local businesses including the Catskill Brewery, Roscoe Beer Company, Catskill Distilling Company and Eminance Road Farm Winery.

Aside from promoting local businesses, the event seeks to promote community and cultural initiatives in the county. To this end, some of the artists featured in the installations and galleries throughout town will be from New York City and farther abroad. Nearly every Main Street business will have a gallery with one of the artists’ works on display. Installations may even be found in the streets and between buildings in town. Among the featured art displays will be “Activating Callicoon: Algorithmic Landscapes of Western Catskills.” This collection of installments is curated by Stephen Zacks and pays heed to the relationships between landscapes and technology by examining temporary pavilions, projections and other new media. Zacks, who is an architectural critic, has selected artists for the installment with the help of Amplifier Inc., which serves to connect artists with design projects and other groups in need of globally inspired art.

At 7 p.m., the event will fire up again with an after party led by DJ Tomas at the Western Hotel’s terrace and Callicoon Brewing Company. Those in attendance will enjoy live music and, of course, ales and other beverages.
