'Untitled': sculpture by Sauerhoff

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Untitled,” an exhibition of sculpture by Mark Sauerhoff, will be on display at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, 37 Main St., in the Loft Gallery through July 7.

“Most of my sculptures rely on tension, often pitting something mundane and recognizable against something surprising or dangerous,” says sculptor Mark Sauerhoff. “I want the piece to be precarious, tipping over or giving the illusion of coming undone. I want to convey a sense of something about to happen.”

Sauerhoff’s works combine hard-edged metal and wood constructions with unexpected elements. His materials are various and include cardboard boxes, tar, chairs, metal cages, and often stuffed animals.

Sauerhoff, who divides his time between New York City and Damascus PA, creates both indoor and outdoor sculptures.

“By design my art is not pristine,” he says. “These pieces, like our bodies, are vulnerable to aging, settling, and decay. My biggest challenge as an artist is to listen to my unconscious process and allow the intended piece to emerge.”

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The activities of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance are made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. For more information, visit delawarevalleyartsalliance.org or call 845/252-7576.
