JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — JEMS (Jeffersonville Enhances More of Sullivan) will sponsor an event celebrating Native American culture on Saturday, June 16, beginning at 7 p.m. in The Backyard Park, 876 Swiss Hill Rd. North.

Native American performers Larry Spotted Crow Mann and Delwin Fiddler Jr., will provide Native American entertainment. Mann (whisperingbasket.com), a member of Nipmuc Tribe, will play his wooden flute and delight the audience with his Native American stories. An award-winning writer, poet, cultural educator, traditional story teller, tribal drummer/dancer and motivational speaker., he has authored award winning books including his latest collection of legends, titled “Drumming and Dreaming.” He will do a book signing at intermission.

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe member Fiddler (athe hakapa.com) will perform traditional Lakota dance, drumming and singing wearing his traditional clothing. He will also discuss Native American history. Fiddler is an internationally renowned Native American performing artist who has appeared at embassies around the world and for three American presidents. He is a descendant of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and Elk Head.

After their performance, Fiddler and Mann will judge a dream-catcher contest, with entries created by students K through 12 using kits they can pick up at any branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library. They can assemble the basic kit only, or embellish them with beads, feathers and the like. The winner of the contest will receive a $25 cash prize.

Native American food and merchandise will be available for purchase at the event. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. No pets are allowed in The Backyard Park.

Admission costs $10 per person or $20 per family. Children age 12 can attend free.
