LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Livingston Manor Library and Morgan Outdoors are celebrating Alaska’s 1,000 mile dogsled race, the 2017 Iditarod. On Sunday, March 5, 72 dogsled teams will cross the starting line in Anchorage and race across Alaska to the finish line in Nome, concluding on March 11.

To mark the occasion, the film “Toughest Race on Earth: Iditarod” will be shown at Morgan Outdoors, 46 Main St., at 1 p.m. on March 5. The 45-minute documentary film takes a look behind the scenes of this amazing dogsled race. You’ll get to know several of the top racers, their dog teams and the race route. Unique Iditarod-themed refreshments will be featured. Space is limited, so reservations are required for the free event; call the library at 845/439-5540.

The Livingston Manor Free Library, at 92 Main St., will have an Iditarod display including a map of the race route. There will be a special story time reading of “Cotton’s Tale: A True Iditarod Story” by Herb Brawley, and children can bring their favorite stuffed animal to add to the “library sled team.” Stationery will be available at the front desk to write to the mushers (or their dogs!).

All events are free and open to the public. For more information call the library or Morgan Outdoors (845/439-5507).
