Gravity Indoor Marketplace reopens after storm

HONESDALE, PA — You can’t keep a good business down.

On April 6, Honesdale’s Gravity Indoor Marketplace will reopen, with 50 vendors and a wide range of goods for sale.

Last year’s selling season started off triumphantly. It was 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Jenny Young, owner of both Gravity Ice Cream and Gravity Indoor Marketplace, was in the ice cream store. The next-door marketplace was closed for the day. It had been open for seven weekends. Business was booming. Vendors and customers were happy.

And then the storm hit.

“We heard a big crash, and I opened the door… a brick wall had come down and some of the bricks went through the roof,” Young said.

The building, built in 1830s, was the carriage house for the hotel next door (now Van Gorder’s Furniture).  The brick wall was part of a long-gone second story on the carriage house.

The damage was extensive, but, “We were so grateful we were closed,” Young said.

The work took months, but Young is ready to reopen on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Thirty-eight of the 40 vendors who were in here are coming back. And we added space for more,” she said. Opening weekend will feature door prizes and refreshments.

As it did before the storm, Gravity Indoor Marketplace will host vendors selling a wide range of goods, from linens to furniture, soaps to crafts. Vendors can try a day for free before committing.  It’s a mix of traditional vendors, garage-sale tables, pop-up shops, people testing the waters of retail before jumping in.

“We were a family for seven weeks,” Young said. And she’s happy to be back.
