LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society (CAS) is presenting an encore exhibition of farmer-artist Lavern Kelley’s work in its Elevator Gallery, a follow-up to the major retrospective CAS hosted in July. Kelley (1928-1998) was an unassuming farmer whose works can be found in museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM.

The exhibit will feature woodcarvings and works on paper including a visual chronology of Kelley’s truck sculptures, starting with crude yet powerful works carved in the 1950s. His last trucks in the 1990s are perfect replicas—in wood—of every detail of the models that caught his fancy. In the 1960s, Kelley began to photograph the finished pieces outdoors, in a fashion designed to make them look full-scale, and samples of these photos are on view.

Throughout his childhood and into his 20s, Kelley drew farming activities with what was then the latest farm equipment. Some  of these drawings will also be on display, as well as several sculpted figures, for instance, a farm boy in blue dungarees and a tableau of a man cultivating corn with horses in the early 20th century. Most of the works on view are available for purchase.

The exhibit will be on view through November 19. For more information visit www.catskillart society.org.
