‘An Evening of PDAs’
HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Sullivan County Historical Society and the Professional Women of Sullivan County will present “An Evening of PDAs—Public Displays of Affection, Anger and Art in America” as photographed by county resident Jonathan C. Hyman. There will be a slideshow lecture by Hyman, followed by a Q&A on Wednesday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sullivan County Musuem.
In the aftermath of 9/11, Hyman was moved by the spontaneous and visceral reaction, and set out on a journey across America photographing and documenting over 20,000 memorials intended to honor victims, express grief and inspire patriotism. These highly acclaimed photos have been featured on TV, published by the University of Texas Press and showcased in solo exhibits across the U.S. and Europe.
One of Hyman’s more current projects is “The Visual Culture of Trumpism.” With no political bias, Hyman has sought to capture the energizing effect of the 2016 Presidential campaign and the movements inspired since the landmark election. His images focus on the handmade, heartfelt folk art displayed in public places.
