Honey Bee Festival coming

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Honey Bee Festival will be held September 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street in Narrowsburg.
Local and regional vendors will display a variety of bee-related goods, including local honey, beeswax, candles, honey based food, bee-friendly clothing, pollinator plants, natural soap and honey-made cosmetics. Main Street merchants will have honey-based menus, honey wine, honey spirits, books and gifts.

Hosted at the Birch Garden, Ed Wesely (founder of the Butterfly Barn) will demonstrate how to tag monarch butterflies and describe the importance of tracking their annual migration to Mexico. Monarch butterfly brochures will be given away by the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway Commission.

Artist Matthew Willey will give a short presentation on his ongoing project “The Good of the Hive,” an initiative to paint 50,000 bees across the globe to help raise awareness of the problems facing the honeybee and beekeepers. He will also talk about the mural he painted on the post office in town.
Town councilwoman Brandi Merolla, along with other officials and honey bee organizers, will formally dedicate Willey’s mural.

Funding for Sullivan airport runway

TOWN OF BETHEL, NY — Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19) on September 20 announced $3,602,134.00 in federal funding to rehabilitate the runway at Sullivan County International Airport in Monticello. This funding was a product of the Department of Transportation’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The AIP provides grants to public agencies, and some private partners, for the planning and development of public-use airports.

“Sullivan County International Airport connects the Catskills to the world, and I am pleased to announce significant federal funding that will allow them to revitalize their runway and grow operations in the area.” Delgado continued, “investing in our infrastructure is key to developing our economy, creating jobs, and attracting businesses to Sullivan County, and improving Sullivan Airport’s runway will allow them to continue to run efficiently. I will keep advocating for investments in our rural infrastructure to ensure upstate businesses and residents remain connected to the global economy.”

“Our runway hasn’t been completely rehabilitated like this in 20 years,” said District 7 Legislator Joe Perrello, chair of the Legislature’s Public Works Committee.

Pedestrian death in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — Richard Fleszar of Lake Ariel was hit and killed by a vehicle on Saturday, September 21.

According to Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell, Fleszar was walking near Fair Avenue in Honesdale at around 9:45 p.m. when he was struck and killed. He was 29 years old. Howell has ruled the death accidental.

Honesdale Fire Company grant

HONESDALE, PA — Rep. Matt Cartwright (PA-8) has announced that volunteer-based Hose Company No. 1 in Honesdale will receive $36,442.85 through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFP).
The grant money, distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will go toward purchasing 66 dual-purpose hoses, one portable monitor and a manifold.

“This equipment will be vital for these firefighters to protect the two boroughs and six surrounding townships they serve,” Cartwright said in a press release.

Manchester man arrested for disorderly conduct

MANCHESTER TWP, PA — Daniel Fritz of Manchester has been arrested for intimidating and threatening a guided pheasant-hunting group. Police say that on September 21, Fritz drove his vehicle onto private property and told the group they had to stop their hunt because they were disturbing nearby residents. The guide said there was a handgun openly displayed on the passenger seat of the vehicle and the group felt threatened.

Fritz left the group and returned to his property some 200 yards away, and fired the gun, according to police, “for no apparent reason other than to intimidate the hunters.” Fritz told police that he and his wife believed they heard pellets from the hunter’s shotguns falling into their yard. Fritz admitted to driving onto private property with the gun in his vehicle, and to firing the gun when he returned home. The officer issued citations for trespass, harassment and disorderly conduct.
