YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, NY — The Sullivan West girls’ varsity soccer squad ran into some heavy weather.

The Lady Bulldogs booters (8-7-1) made it to the first-round of state Class C of the competition, only to fall 6-1 to the Lady Blue Devils of Haldane High School from Cold Spring, NY.

“They showed us the level that we need to get to next year, [and] I truly believe that we can,” said Mike Ellmauer, veteran coach of the Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West.

“Our eyes were opened last night.”

The NYSHHSAA regional match was held Monday night, November 1, under the lights at Yorktown High School “Home of the Huskies” on their state-of-the-art Charlie Murphy Field.

The opening six minutes of the match took the wind out of the Lady Bulldogs’ sails, and throughout the match they faced some seriously stormy weather as they defended against 32 shots on goal.

Haldane’s Hannah Montelone racked up a coveted hat trick by scoring three goals, including a 55-foot strike. 

She scored on an assist from Missy Lisikatos, then scored her second goal of the evening unassisted, and wrapped up her hat trick, once again teaming up with Likikatos.

Likikatos, Robin Ben-Adi and Allison Chiera added goals of their own to round out Haldane’s regional romp.

Alzy Cinquanta also picked up credit for an assist. 

Sullivan West’s lonely goal was a short second-half breakaway boot off the foot of Samantha Becker with an assist by Josephine Martinez.

The Lady Bulldog’s keeper Isabel Nearing had 14 saves, while her teammates had eight shots on goal and two corner kicks.

Haldane’s goalie Amelia Hall was credited with seven saves. The team fired a whopping 32 shots on goal, and had four corner kicks.

“We played about as well as we could have… Haldane was another step above our play,” said Ellmauer.

“We did have a great history-making season, and look forward to adding other pages to that history in the coming season,” added Sullivan’s West’s coach, who has been at the helm for overs three decades.

Gary VanAsselt summed up the match.

“It was a well fought contest,” he said. “Both teams played hard, left it out on the field.”

The Lady Bulldogs left a lot of blood, sweat, and yes, a lot of tears on the field, but left for home with their heads held high. Perhaps recalling memories of the season, or what’s ahead next year.
