Indians pound Dawgs 13-1

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — Sometimes “13” is a lucky number, and “1” can be the loneliest number in the world.

On Friday, April 28, the Liberty Indians (1-5) varsity baseball team picked up their first win of the season by walloping the home team Bulldogs of Sullivan West 13-1.

For the mathematically inclined: Liberty had 13 runs on 9 hits with 36 at bats, while Sullivan West (4-5) picked up their solo run on 7 hits with 30 at bats.

On the mound: the Bulldogs starter Brandon Dailey hurled for 3 2/3 innings and was relieved by John McCormack (1 inning) followed by Jared Zaccari (1 1/3); Liberty’s Jareb Krebs picked up the win, pitching for six frames, and Michael Cohen closed it out in the seventh inning.

Sullivan West’s run was posted in the top of the third on a double by Alex Schwalb, who advanced to the hot corner on a grounder and then scored on a sac fly by Collin Hauschild.

Liberty’s Alex Wilson had a couple of double and four RBIs, and Zacharias Fitzpatrick posted two hits with a double and three RBIs.

Sullivan West’s big gun was Ben Mitterwager with three hits.

The Indians sent runners scampering across the plate with one run in the first frame, five in the second, three in the fourth, and four in the fifth.

Hope that adds up to 13 runs!

“Liberty played very well today”, said Sullivan West coach Bill Kirk. “They have a very good ball club… they had a couple of big hits to blow it open.”

Kirk said the Bulldogs took to the field coming off a “really good week (3-1)... today we had a little momentum.”

But sometimes momentum isn’t enough to ward of 13 runs… there’s that lucky number again.

Indians co-coach Justen Mills said his team came to play after a tough 5-3 loss to Cornwall the other day, an outing that left then thirsting for a win.

“We wanted to bring some of that intensity and hustle… a never-quit [attitude] to the rest of the season,” said Mills.

“We’re going to start to manufacture runs… we hope we can get this going!”
