LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — The number-one-seeded Lady Yellow Jackets lived up to their reputation as hardscrabble never-say-die hoopsters, as they defeated second-ranked Lady Warriors of Webutuck 49-27 “Down in the Bunker” at SUNY Sullivan on Wednesday, February 28.

With the win, the Lady Yellow Jackets  (10-6) took their fourth Section IX Class D girls basketball title in five years, the first in second-season coach Ryan Jasper’s tenure at Eldred.

Webutuck took to the court as the number-two ranked team (3-12), but never really stood a chance against Eldred’s aggressive style of buckets, as the Lady Jackets forced seven turnovers during a 10-1 run to build up a 17-3 lead in the first frame.

In the third period, the Lady Yellow Jackets stung Webutuck on the wings of Alaina Gaughan as she scored 11 of her game-high 21 points, including two three-pointers during that deciding frame.

Eldred led in the first three periods (17-7, 8-4, 19-3) until Jasper corralled his horses a bit, and the Lady Warriors posted 13 points to Eldred’s five.

Sami Clemmons added 11 points to Eldred’s victory, while Taylor Edmunson was Webutuck’s top scorer, with 12 points.

“When you get this late in the season, you really don’t know… crazy things happen; it can go either way,” said Jasper.

“These kids are tough, they don’t back down from anybody.”

Eldred’s Hannah Jasper (#25): “We played well as a unit, and didn’t take them lightly,” noting that her team has a tendency to “play down a lot” when not going up against stiff competition.

Sami Clemmons (#21) said of the title victory, ”We came out strong; we didn’t let up.”

Kassandra Weatherly (#12) went down hard in the third period, and was helped into to winner’s circle by her team mates as they were awarded the Section IX Class plaque.

“Last year we fell flat, this year we came back,” said Weatherly. “We started off strong and worked as a team… we did that from start to finish, and that helped us get this win.”
