LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—Seasons come and go, though someone forgot to tell that to this lingering winter, whose belated passage will not eclipse the memories it imparted, nor the lingering impact rendered on the hardwood or indoor track. We are the sum total of all of our experiences and as such, not only what we do, but how much of ourselves we invest in that undertaking, alters us as we continue to learn and evolve.

Listening to the coaches talk about their players’ accomplishments and milestones at the Sullivan West Winter Awards Night Presentation on March 19, one could appreciate the long term benefits of this past winter’s endeavors. The season’s most salient milestone was the Division V girls indoor track championship, the first division crown garnered since 2009. The boys indoor track team was the recipient of a NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete designation, an honor given to a team with a cumulative GPA of 90 percent or better. You can find out much more about the players, teams and commentary by reading, “Frosty Dawgs” on www.sportsinsightsny.com. Bristol Woods and Derrick Keller were named the team’s Most Valuable Skiers. Quinn Hofer and Chase Smith were the Most Improved Skiers. The Cheerleading Coach’s Award went to Tabitha Lilley. Sullivan West raised $900 dollars out of the $3,000 dollars collected in this year’s BCANY Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The proceeds were once again donated to the Catskill Regional Oncology Unit. Kelsey Brockner was named the Most Improved Player. Carly Grishaber was named Miss Basketball 2013-14. Jiron Kevii was cited as boys basketball team’s Most Improved Player. Owen Andrews won the Coach’s Award. Girls Winter Indoor Track Coach Joe Seidl lauded the 2013-14 Division V Indoor Track Champions. “This group of young women experienced obstacles at times but like all champions they came together when it mattered the most,” he averred. They beat Tri-Valley, Eldred, Milbrook, Pine Plains and Chester over the course of two grueling days that included a late night arrival home followed by an incredibly early return to West Point the following day. “This championship belongs to all of these girls on the stage. Eighth grader Stephanie Schwab was named the Most Valuable Winter Indoor Field Athlete. She was the Division V and Sullivan County high jump champion. Kelsey Dutton was named the Track MVP. Her performances at the Divisional Championships in the 1500 and 3000 meters were key in our victory.” At the state qualifier meet she set a personal best of 5:18 in the 1500 meter run. Boys indoor track Coach Ron Bauer noted that the team finished second in the divisional meet and third in the county. At the Division championships, Hunter Flynn won the 1000. Patrick Pierce won the high jump. Mitch Paciga was first in the 55 hurdles, Kevin Hart was first in the 300. Anthony Rydell was first in the weight throw. In the OCIAA League championships Paciga medaled in the high jump and 55 hurdles competing against all the schools including the large Class AA behemoths. Rydell won the state qualifier in the weight throw and reached the qualifying standard for the nationals. He competed in the nationals at the Armory, finishing 23rd overall with is best throw of 49-10. Bauer cited Pierce and Rydell as the two most improved participants. Kevin Hart was the team’s Most Valuable Track Athlete. Mitch Paciga won the honors as the Most Valuable Field Athlete. A musical slide show created by this photographer capped off the tribute to this winter’s exemplary participants. For an album of photos visit www.sportsinsights.smugmug.com.
