SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY—“Here, There and Everywhere,” the title of one of countless Beatles hits, aptly describes this writer/photographer’s sojourns documenting epic athletic milestones this past week. The winter season rushes headlong towards its stunning denouement just a few weeks hence. It all began with a trip to Belleayre Mountain on February 4 to photograph the skiers on the giant slalom course.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Monticello boys and girls won their respective division titles. The Lady Panthers finished 48-0. Fallsburg/Tri-Valley was second among girls and Liberty was second among the boys in the division. On February 11 the elite leaders headed to the Section IX Alpine Ski Championships at Hunter Mountain. They included Joe Klein (M), Carl McGuire (L), Zak Steingart (F/T-V), Alec Wood (M), DJ Oldfield (M), Bradley Mitchell (M), Sam Goldstein (F/T-V), Daniel Johnston (L), Jonathan Resnick (M), Joe Kleinberger (L), Kyle Floss (M), Olivia Racette (L), Riley Lindholm (M), Haley Ripa (M), Mackenzie Mitchell (M), Taylor Pavese (F-T/V), Jenna Hogue (M), Ashley McEneany (M), Meta Learney (L), Kamry Conboy (L), Megan Porter (F/T-V), Christiana Poli (M), McKaela Bunce (M) and Ashlyn Matthews (F/T-V). On February 7-8 at Sullivan County Community College, the Sixth Annual Sullivan BCANY vs. Cancer Classic featured 10 local teams over a two-day span. The event was dedicated in the memory of David “Wayne” DePew, the father of Sullivan County Athletic Director Chris DePew. This year $2,800 dollars was raised for the Catskill Regional Oncology Unit. Sullivan County Monticello Coach Chris Russo, who is the Section IX BCANY chairman, switched the sponsorship of the event last year away from Coaches vs. Cancer, as the national organization would not allow a direct contribution of the proceeds to the local hospital. The game scores were as follows: Chester 55, Eldred 33 (girls); Tri-Valley 75, Sullivan West 60 (boys); Tri-Valley 62, Sullivan West 27 (girls). Tri-Valley improved to 13-0. They are the fourth-ranked Class C team in the state. In addition: S.S. Seward 79. Roscoe 46 (boys); Port Jervis 50, Fallsburg 48 (boys); Monticello 53, Liberty 24 (J-V boys); and Monticello 61, Liberty 29. On February 8, the sports trek took me to West Point to document the OCIAA Indoor Track Championships, featuring all the schools in the Orange County League, to amass photos primarily of local runners, jumpers and throwers. On February 10, the Liberty girls and the Monticello boys prevailed at the Sullivan County Indoor Track Championships. Liberty ended a four-year run by the Lady Bears. Monticello successfully defended its title. Boys Team scores: 1. Monticello 106 points; 2. Tri-Valley 72; 3. Sullivan West 70; 4. Ellenville 49; 5. Liberty 24; 6. Eldred 19. 55 meters: Terry Duncan (Mon) 6.8; 300: Terry Duncan (Mon) 39.25; 600: Jon Harned (Mon) 1:32.3; 1,000: Tyler Foxwell (Mon) 2:53.9; 2.; 1,600: Ian Kurzrock (TV) 4:58.8; 55 hurdles: Mitch Paciga (SW) 8.35; 4-by-187 relay: Monticello (Duncan, Rainey, Hanes, Harned) 1:34.2; 4-by-374 relay: Ellenville (Groat, Nunuvero, Rodriguez, Koradis) 3:32.5; 4-by-748 relay: Tri-Valley (Woolsey, Boyes, Hasbrouck, Kurzrock) 8:26.2; high jump: Mitch Paciga (SW) 6-0; shot put: Trevon Rainey (Mon) 47-3.5; Girls Team scores 1.
