SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Using the ocean as a metaphor for this epic week in high school sports, try to envision a massive wave that is breaking with awesome power roiling with Section IX and state tournaments. The immense breakers that preceded it this past week included the Section IX track and field state qualifier, the Section IX Class C baseball demise of Tri-Valley to Rhinebeck in the title game, Livingston Manor’s epic last-inning five-run outburst that propelled them to the Class D softball title for the fourth straight year, Eldred’s baseball final loss to Coleman, Sullivan West’s softball loss to Spackenkill, the Monticello boys 400 relay team posting the fastest time among public high schools from NYS at the Section IX state qualifier and the NYS boys golf tourney with SW’s Drew Billard aboard.

At the Section IX state qualifier a number of local track and field elites punched their ticket to the state meet at Middletown slated for June 7 to 8. Sullivan West senior Reed Scott was Division II’s top finisher in the 3200 with a time of 9:45.53. In track, Division II includes schools with fewer than 600 students from grades nine to 11. This will be Scott’s first trip to states in track. Tri-Valley’s Aric Boyes qualified in the shot put with a lifetime best heave of 50-6. Teammate Josh Winters won the non-state meet javelin with a throw of 153-3. The Monticello quartet of Terry Duncan, Mistah Alli, Razjel Smith and Shane Jackson posted the fastest time among NYS public schools in the 400 relay with a blistering 42.69 seconds. Jackson may also be going in the 400 with his time of 49.94. That is still up in the air.

In girls action, Fallsburg’s Canhace Forrest won the Division II 100 in 12.71 while Port Jervis’ Kalissa Caesar took the Division I spot in 12.59. Tri-Valley’s Katlynn Greffrath heads to states behind her 4-8 high jump mark. Teammate Mareena DiMilia goes via her shot put mark of 34-1.5. DiMilia also won the non-state meet hammer throw with a fling of 130-8. She will be heading to nationals in Greensboro, NC to compete in the hammer and the javelin later this month. Sullivan West’s Mitch Paciga made it on his high jump of 6-3.

In baseball, Tri-Valley, the defending Class C champion, defeated number-one seeded Chester 12-6 in the semifinals before losing a heartbreaker 11-5 to Rhinebeck in the title game. It was the Hawks’ first-ever baseball crown. Rhinebeck got out to an early 8-0 lead but the Bears fought back late making it 8-5 with the tying run at the plate before coming up short. Rhinebeck tacked on insurance runs to secure the win. T-V, which began its season at 2-6, ended at 13-9. In Class D, Eldred fell to John A Coleman Catholic by the score of 7-3 in the Section IX Class D final. The Statesmen are the defending state champs.

In softball, Livingston Manor scored five runs in the seventh inning to edge Chapel Field 10-9. It was the Lady Wildcats’ fourth straight Section IX title. They won the state title in 2010 and 2011 played powerful Afton (20-1) in the opening round of the state tourney on June 4. Sullivan West fell to Spackenkill 4-0 in its May 28 Class B quarterfinal as Lady Spartan Gabi Mastrantuono pitched her second no-hitter of the season.

In boys golf, Sullivan West’s Drew Billard was tied for 68th place in the state meet at Ithaca after the opening round. Next week features a wrap up of the state track meet, boys and girls golf tourney and a final word about baseball, softball and the spring season. Also, Tri-Valley will hold its awards night on June 5, so stay tuned to see who won this year’s coveted trophies.
