SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — We’re just one week into the winter season and already compelling action on the hardwood is front and center.

Getting off to a fast start in boys basketball the Sullivan West’s boys defeated Unatego 67-58 in the opening round of the Walton Tourney while Tri-Valley downed Walton 66-48 setting up a title clash between the respective Class B and C locals. The championship was postponed until January 28 at Sullivan West due to icy roads. The Westies defeated Livingston Manor 61-50 as Patrick Pierce led his team with 23 points while T-V downed Chapel Field 81-70 on December 10. Monticello lost a 37-35 heartbreaker to Pocono Mt. East in the 15th Annual Hawley Rotary Tip-Off Tourney opener but came back to defeat Western Wayne 36-31 in the consolation game. Rob Riley led the Panthers with 12 points and fellow senior captain Naquan Holman ripped down 12 rebounds. Riley made the All-Tournament team as Wallenpaupack went on to defeat Pocono Mt. East 53-38 to defend its title won a year ago as the Buckhorns put an end to a two-year Monticello win streak. Fallsburg fell to Chester 56-51 in the title game of the Hambletonian Classic Tourney after the Comets defeated Chapel Field 74-34 in the opener. Eldred lost its season opener to Port Jervis 49-38, while Liberty fell to Wallkill 44-24.

In girls hoop action Tri-Valley downed Chapel Field 65-23 as Katlynn Greffrath scored a career-high 29 points that included five treys. Nicole Bradley pulled down 12 rebounds, Sabrena Smith scored 11 and Caroline Martin and Maria TerBush had five steals apiece. The Lady Bears defeated Class B Ellenville 65-55 as Mareena DiMilia led her team with 17 points. T-V plays Burke before hosting league rival Chester this week.

Sullivan West got its first win of the season as it downed Family School 50-7. Kelsey Brockner scored 10 points while Marianne Durkin had 10. Sullivan West lost to Fallsburg by the score of 45-28 in the Chester Hambletonian opener. Fallsburg then fell to Chester 38-21 in the tourney final. Eldred’s Jessica Schips, Fallsburg’s Nyasia Blakney and Sullivan West’s Marianne Durkin were named to the All-Tournament team. Liberty lost its season opener to Goshen by the score of 60-11. Monticello defeated Sullivan West 55-17 as Shamira Moore posted 14 points in the winning effort. Livingston Manor fell to S.S. Seward 46-35.

Fall honors accorded by Section 9 and the Times-Herald Record’s Varsity 845 included the following Sullivan County athletes:

Section IX Football All-Stars—Class A: Monticello, RB/DE Mistah Ali, LB Jake McLaughlan; Class C: Liberty, RB/LB Ryan Henry, LB Anthony Saravia, QB Quinn Jackson and RB/DB Atwoun Ackerley; Sullivan West, QB/LB Sawyer Erlwein, WR Brad Hemmer and DL Scott Erdman; Tri-Valley, OL/DL Aric Boyes. Times-Herald Record Varsity 845 Cross-Country All-Stars included First team: Alex Campanella, Eldred, senior, 27th in Nike-New York regional meet (16:37.6), third in state Class D meet (16:22.5), won Section 9-D meet (15:53.52), eighth in Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association meet (15:59.56); Kobie Lane, Port Jervis, sophomore, 17th in state Class B meet (16:20.40), third in Section 9-B meet (15:53.15), third in OCIAA meet (15:52.53). Second team: Reed Scott, Sullivan West, senior, 119th in Feds (17:31.3), 10th in state Class C meet (16:32.5), fourth in Section 9-C meet (16:22.90), 15th in OCIAA meet (16:23.24). Girls Second team: Autumn Bender, Tri-Valley freshman, placed 14th at state Class C meet (19:34.2), fourth at Section 9 C meet (19:28.55); 12th at OCIAA Meet (18:58.42). V845 Soccer All-Stars Second team: Pedro Garcia, Sr., midfield, Liberty; Garcia scored 15 goals and had 23 assists.
