The gun lap

Tri-Valley senior Dominique Darby won the Division V title in the shot put with a heave of 37-04.25. She also won the weight throw crown with a mark of 41-04.

This past week, Sullivan West improved to 11-4 with its commanding 56-36 non-league win over neighboring Eldred, a team that must now win all five of its remaining games to make it to the big dance. Westie Matt Cardona led all scorers in that local clash, as he poured in 22 points and authored a spate of blocked shots. Eldred’s P.J. Collins blocked even more and scored 17 for the Yellow Jackets. Also on tap this week is the Fourth Annual Coaches Versus Cancer Basketball Classic slated for Sullivan County Community College on February 11. Eldred’s girls will face Livingston Manor in the opening salvo, followed by a jayvee boys clash between Liberty and Monticello. The varsity boys squads will then go at it, followed by a girls clash between Tri-Valley and Sullivan West. Both of those games are rematches of last year. Monticello’s boys and T-V’s girls emerged victorious in last year’s event, which raised upward of $3,200 dollars for the Catskill Regional Oncology Unit. This year, the Sullivan County Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will also stage games against the Borough of Manhattan as part of the event dedicated to the memory of Cierra Boone, a cousin of Generals’ star Dante Agnew.

In skiing, Monticello’s girls clinched the Division 1 title and Haley Heins was crowned individual champion, while the Montie boys finished second to Onteora as Panther Ryan Heins tied Onteora’s Jake Combe for the individual title. Sullivan West’s Drew Billard fractured his wrist at Belleayre Mountain on January 30 and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

In indoor track, Tri-Valley’s boys and girls were crowned Division V champions. Eldred’s boys and girls were runners up.
