SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — In local football, only league games count toward earning a playoff berth. For Class C, Sullivan West, Tri-Valley, Liberty and Fallsburg, as well as Class A Monticello, teams need to win two of three league games to qualify.

Sullivan West (2-1, 1-0 Class C) racked up a vital 26-14 Division I win over Ellenville. Trailing 14-0, the Dawgs got first-half TDs from Cody Franskevicz and Sawyer Erlwein to tie it up in the first half before completing their 26 unanswered point assault with TDs from Thomas Mootz and Jared Meola. E.J. Franskevicz completed 9/20 passes for 162 yards with three TDs. Sullivan West travels to O’Neill on September 23 needing only one more win to lock up a playoff berth.

Liberty (2-1, 0-1 Class C) lost a 14-13 heartbreaker to O’Neill. The Indians recovered an O’Neill fumble and got to the three-yard line only to miss a field goal as time ran out. They got TDs from Ryan Henry and Anthony Covington. Liberty hosts Ellenville on September 23 on Pride Weekend with both teams looking to stave off elimination.

Eldred (1-2, 0-1 Class D) lost its first league game, falling to Livingston Manor/Roscoe (2-1, 1-0 Class D) by the score of 25-8. The Devil Cats host Chester on September 24 in what may well be a preview of a title game rematch, while Eldred hosts Tri-Valley in a non-league fray.

Tri-Valley (1-2, 1-0 Class C) lost to Chester 34-7 in a non-league tilt as they were victimized by five turnovers. Tri-Valley (1-2, 1-0 Class D) needs to beat either Fallsburg, Burke or Millbrook to punch a ticket back to the playoffs. Monticello (1-2, 0-1) Class A fell to rival Cornwall 52-7. The Panthers must beat both Goshen and Port Jervis to make it to the dance.

Fallsburg (0-3, 0-1 Class C) lost to Millbrook 38-12. The Comets have yet to win on the gridiron since starting football in 2010.

Boys Soccer: Sullivan West (0-3-1, 0-1-1 OCIAA) lost to Burke and Family School, but garnered an impressive 3-3 tie against Liberty (1-0-1). Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Bulldogs got goals from Richard Lander and Jared Ellsworth to register the tie. Liberty beat Monticello 7-2. Fallsburg (0-2 OCIAA) lost to S.S. Seward and then fell to Tuxedo. Eldred (0-3 OCIAA) lost to Chester and Family School. Tri-Valley (1-2, 1-0 OCIAA) beat Chapel Field.

Girls Soccer: Sullivan West (1-1) beat Family School 4-1. Eldred (O-3 OCIAA) lost its first three league games to S.S. Seward, Fallsburg and Chester.

Cross-Country: Tri-Valley’s Jimmy Bernstein (16:13) and Autumn Bender (19:16) paced the Bears to team wins over Liberty, Sullivan West and Monticello on the Panthers’ home course. T-V’s Omar Lopez (16:16), SW’s Reed Scott (16:35), T-V’s Hauk Boyes (17:14) and Monticello’s Joe Klein (17:37) rounded out the top five finishers. Monticello’s Camryn Johnson (19:32), SW’s Dani Myers (19:55), Monticello’s Sydney Johnson (20:14) and SW’s Kelsey Dutton (20:28) rounded out the top five girls. Eldred’s Alex Campanella (16:12.9) finished second at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Cross-Country Invitational. Hunter Proscia was 11th in 17:27.2. Eldred will vie against Liberty, Monticello, Tri-Valley and Sullivan West at Liberty on September 20.
