JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Track and field teams are among the largest fielded by schools during the sports year. In some schools, a winning tradition offers an ongoing allure to younger students. Consequently, the ranks swell and points rise as there are more kids to cover events. Such is the case at Tri-Valley. As the Bears’ t-shirts advertise, “Join the team and share the dream.”

Sullivan West’s teams are smaller in number but no less committed and talented. The two schools have a storied history of track clashes. Tri-Valley’s girls are the defending Section 9 champions. Two years ago that honor belonged to the SW boys.

The annual Division IV clash was held at SW’s track on April 13. A bright and balmy day provided the backdrop for the engaging encounter. Tri-Valley got early with wins in the 3200 relays. Omar Lopez, Hauk Boyes, Justin Weintraub and Aidan Woosey turned in a winning time of 9:23, while Autumn Bender, Caroline Bertholf, Alexandria Brooks and Ashley Weintraub combined for a victory in 10:43.

T-V’s Brian Edwards continued his dominance in the shot put with a heave of 45-6.7, while Dominique Darby won with a throw of 36-6. In the long jump, Sullivan West’s Brandon Wagner took first in 16-11, as did Hannah Feinman with a mark of 14-9.5. The duo also won the triple jump as Wagner posted a 36-7 and Feinman leaped 30-7.5. In the 110 high hurdles, T-V’s Damon Lopez prevailed in 17.7. He also won the 400 intermediate hurdles in 63.3. Feinman won the 100 high hurdles in 17.5. Sullivan West’s Kristina Sumfleth captured the 400 intermediate hurdles in 76.6 and surpassed her best pole vault with a winning mark of 7-6. Sullivan West’s Kyle Flynn sped to victory in the 100 in 11.6 and the 200 in 24.3. T-V’s Kaitlynn Greffrath was tops in the 100 in 13.5. Sullivan West’s Laura Vennes took the 200 in 30.8.

T-V’s Richard Johnson won the 400 in 57.7 and Alexandria Brooks won the event in 66-0. T-V took the 1600 relay won by Weintraub, Lopez, Woosley and Damon Lopez in 3:55.4. Agnes Pompeii, Bender, Brooks and Weintraub were preeminent in 4:44.6.

Omar Lopez won the 800 in 2:20.7, while Sullivan West’s Rianne Erlwein won it in 2:31.3. Lopez grabbed the 1600 in 5:07.2, while Bender nabbed the 1500 in 5:20.9. Hauk Boyes won the 3200 in 10:59.7. Dani Myers won the 3000 for SW in 11:37.7. The speedy boys 400 relay went to Tri-Valley in 47.9. The Lady Bears won it in 57.6.

Westie Todd Roeder captured the discus with a heave of 134-8, while Darby won the event with a throw of 90-9. In the pole vault, T-V’s Aidan Woolsey equaled his top leap at 10-0. In the high jump, it was SW’s Mitch Paciga topping out at 5-0, while Kaitlynn Greffrath took the honors for T-V at 4-6.

On a chilly, rainy April 16, Tri-Valley played host to 28 schools at the annual Tri-Valley Relays. The Lady Bears won Div. II. Sullivan West was fourth and Eldred was fifth. In the boys meet, Monticello was fourth in Division I, while Tri-Valley took second in Division II. Individual local winners included the following.

Boys: From Eldred, 3200, Alex Campanella, 9:47.1; 2000 steeplechase, Hunter Proscia, 7:40. From Tri-Valley, hammer throw, Rafael Ramirez, 139-2; freshman/sophomore shot put, Brendan Tierney, 34-7½. From Monticello, 400, Tino Taylor 52.7.
