SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Winter’s lingering imprint evinced a new blanket of snow last week, just as teams were feeling encouraged by 60-degree temperatures days before. An addendum to winter’s final statement came at the Tri-Valley sports awards ceremony, which acknowledged the following MVPs: girls basketball, Jakki Pugh; boys basketball, Peter DiMilia; alpine skiing, Ryan and Kendra Erts; boys indoor track, Jim Bernstein, Omar Lopez and Brian Edwards; girls indoor track, Agnes Pompeii, Ashley Weintraub and Emma Tingley; wrestling, John Monforte; and cheerleading, Allyson Delaney. Tri-Valley girls basketball coach John Tenbus was named as Division V and Class C Coach of the Year by Section 9. This was his first year at the helm. Pugh was named Division V and Class C Player of the Year.

On April 4, baseball, softball, track, tennis and golf will officially get underway. To set the stage, here are just some of the highlights from last spring.

Softball: Sullivan West was Division IV co-champion with O’Neill and beat Onteora 4-3 in the Section 9 quarterfinals before losing to Highland. Livingston Manor won the Class D state championship title as they beat Section V’s Bolivar-Richburg 2-1 behind the stellar pitching of Marissa Diescher, who is bound for Penn State in the fall. The 34-6 hurler, with an 0.25 ERA and 632 strike outs, looks to help the Lady Wildcats defend their sectional and state titles.

Track and field: For the second year in a row, Eldred boys and girls swept the Division V and Section 9 Class D titles and all without a track, which was under reconstruction. Diana Schombs led the way for the girls with four gold medals. The new track will be the setting for Eldred’s first meet on April 7. Last spring, Christina Watts was named the Top Female Track Athlete at the Monticello Games. Tri-Valley’s girls repeated as Division IV and Section 9 champs. Liberty boys were Section 9 runners up to Ellenville and New Paltz. Monticello won its first ever Division III title.

Sullivan West’s girls were runner up to Tri-Valley in Division IV and Class C Sectionals. Katie Manzi was the Section 9 champ in the 400. Morgan Hawkins won the 400 hurdles and finished 10th in states. Kendra Barker was the triple jump champ and finished 10th at states. Dani Myers was Section 9 champ in the 3000. SW’s 4x800 relay won gold too.

Todd Roeder, Brandon Wagner, Anthony Nicoletti and Gabe Lagrutta won Section 9 titles in discus, triple jump, high jump and javelin, respectively. SW’s 400-relay team was also a gold medal winner.

Golf: Sullivan West’s boys won an unprecedented seventh straight Division IV title. Drew Billard was a Section 9 qualifier. Sullivan West’s girls shared the Division III title with Monticello. Jillian Fife was a state qualifier.

Baseball: Sullivan West (14-6) lost to Spackenkiill in the Class B quarterfinals. For the second year in a row, they wrested the season series from Burke. Winning two of three against Liberty enabled SW to bar the Indians from sectionals.

Here are some upcoming games/meets: Baseball: 4/4, T-V@Liberty, Fallsburg@SW; 4/5, MHS@T-V; 4/7 Eldred@MHS, Chapel Field@Liberty and T-V@SW; Softball: 4/4, Eldred@LM, Chester@T-V, SW@Liberty; 4/6, T-V@Eldred, Port Jervis@MHS; Track: 4/7, Cornwall@MHS, Chapel Field@SW, Burke@Liberty, Fallsburg@Eldred.
