Marie “Bette” Davies of Beach Lake, PA died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at home surrounded by her family. She was 95.
Born December 25, 1915 in Scranton, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the Patrick and Jesse Walker O’Brien family. She was a graduate of Carbondale High School and later moved to Damascus, PA.
A housewife and mother, she was known to be a “handy” woman, who loved to sew, garden and refinish furniture. While living in Damascus, she was a member of Holy Cross Church in Callicoon.
Surviving are her sons Alonzo Davies and Diane of Hawthorne, NJ and Charles Davies and Caroline Grady of Fierre Verde, FL; daughters Diane Cartwright of Walden, NY and Bette Ann Baerenklau and Albert of Beach Lake; sister-in-laws Ann McGowan of Atlanta, GA, Mary Riefler Davies of CA and Mary Walher Davies of CA; 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Francis Davies on September 15, 1974; a grandson, Brian Davies, a great-grandson Chad Sykes; a brother, Lawrence O’Brien, sisters Anna Lewis and Nina Merck; a daughter-in-law, Jane (Case) Davies; and sons-in-law Frank Cartwright and David Tyler.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, December 28 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale. Interment followed in St. John’s Cemetery.
