James Bernard “JB” Dexter passed away peacefully on Monday, March 19, 2012 in the Presbyterian Home, New Hartford, CT. He was 81.
He was born on October 7, 1930 in Cochecton, NY, son of the late Ralph W. and Roberta Cornwell Dexter.
Jim was raised in Narrowsburg, NY. He graduated from Narrowsburg Central School and from New York State Ranger School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, in Washington DC and as a specialized unit for testing nuclear bombs in Nevada.
In 1965 he married the former Elsie (Howe) Dewan in Herkimer, NY. She passed away on January 5, 1998.
He was a licensed land surveyor for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in Herkimer until his retirement, and was a member of the American Congress of Surveying & Mapping, the NYS Society of Professional Land Surveyors and the Mohawk Valley Society of Professional Land Surveyors. He was an avid skier and true lover of nature and the outdoors.
Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls.
He is survived by stepchildren Thomas Elliot and Patricia Dewan of Staunton, VA, Patrick Kenneth and Shari Dewan of Myrtle Beach, SC, William and Barbara Dewan of Grand Prairie, TX and Susan Marie Dewan of Freeville, NY; brother William R. Dexter and wife Jennie of Narrowsburg, sisters Barbara Myer and husband Clifford of Milford, PA, Doris Roda and husband Warren of Otisville; grandchildren Caitlin Dixon, Brady Dewan, Karin Herron, Mary Brady, William Dewan, Christen Micheal, Julie Dewan, Todd Dewan and Craig Dewan; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services took place in the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls on Friday, March 23 with the Reverend Janet Gleason officiating. Interment in Boonville Cemetery will take place later this spring.
