LIBERTY, NY — Families can foster a lifelong gardening interest with their children this summer by enrolling in a Junior Master Gardener program in Sullivan County. Children ages five through 12 will experience the wonderful world of gardening under the supervision of Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Sullivan County.
Classes will be held every third Wednesday from June through September between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Gerald J. Skoda Extension Education Center teaching garden. This four-class series will prepare children to be Junior Master Gardeners. A future program will instruct children how to become official Junior Master Gardeners.
• June 18 – Botany Workshop: Participants will plant a teepee, vegetable garden and make a “plant person” to take home.
• July 16 – Soil & Water Workshop: Youth can learn all about composting, the water cycle and make a woodland terrarium to take home.
• August 20 – Entomology Workshop: Children will learn all about insects, including beneficial and harmful, and make batik-art insects.
• September 17 – Harvest Workshop: Sun herbal tea and other herbal recipes will be enjoyed while making pressed flower art.
Up to 15 children will be accepted into the program. Each class costs $10 or the series costs $30. Healthy snacks are included. Pre-registration is required with non-refundable payment in advance.
