WESTERN SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — In the fall of 2011, the Western Sullivan Public Library (WSPL), with support from a Sullivan County Arts and Heritage Grant, will sponsor six free introductory courses in the art of oral history. WSPL will provide simple beginner training in approach, ethics, methods, technology, interviewing, presentation and preservation in hopes that volunteers can collect local oral histories for our new “Unearthed: Oral Histories of the Upper Delaware River” project. WSPL will also sponsor visits by special guest oral historian Jan Quackenbush and mentorships in creative presentation by NACL Theatre Artist Director Tannis Kowalchuk.
The unearthed oral history project specifically aims to collect oral histories from the older members of our community about their relationship to the Delaware River. We hope to collect stories, myths, tall tales, secrets and mysteries about living near the river, as well as collect the more practical stories about river industries, farms, and forests.
The first workshop will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jeffersonville Branch and on Saturday, September 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Narrowsburg branch. Email firstname.lastname@example.org , or call 845/482-4350 for Jeffersonville and 845/252-3360 for Narrowsburg.
