ALBANY, NY — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has increased Deer Management Permits (DMPs, or “doe tags”) statewide by about 18% for the approaching deer hunting season.
Here in the Upper Delaware River Valley, DEC’s Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 3M, which includes parts of Sullivan, Orange and Ulster counties and covers nearly 750 square miles, is one of the state’s WMUs that needs substantial deer population reduction.
A look at the table found at this website (www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html) shows that DEC hopes to issue 49,200 DMPs (or 65.7 DMPs per square mile), and the chance of a hunter’s receiving two DMPs in this management area is high both for residents and non-residents.
See www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6094.html for information about hunting licenses in New York State.
