MILFORD, PA — A hike that will showcase the forests, geology and history of the Sawkill Gorge is planned for Saturday, July 13, at Grey Towers National Historic Site. Reservations are required and group size is limited for this free, public hike.

The Sawkill Creek, whose flowing waters carved the narrow gorge, is bordered by a diverse and healthy biological community, which accounts for its exceptional water quality. It was a favorite fishing spot for eminent conservationist Gifford Pinchot, founder of the U.S. Forest Service and two-term governor of Pennsylvania, who could often be found in the section of the Sawkill that runs through his family’s lands at Grey Towers. In addition to information about the forests and geology of the gorge, participants also will hear some historic background, including how students from the Yale School of Forestry used it for recreating in the early 1900s.

Because of the popularity of this program, there are two planned departure times, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Reservations are required; group size is limited to 20. Call 570/296-9625 to register and indicate which hike you will be joining. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for sun and tick protection. The hikes will be held rain or shine.

Grey Towers, ancestral home of the Pinchot family, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service with numerous partners. It is an active conservation, education and leadership development center that offers interpretive tours and special programs that continue the family’s conservation legacy.
