The Eldred Junior/Senior High School gets hooked

ELDRED, NY — The Eldred Central High School (ECHS) has formed an all new fishing club focused on teaching kids of all skill levels different techniques. The club has been focusing on casting basics and knot tying, and has started tournaments within the club.

The types of fishing vary from open-water bass fishing, to ice fishing, fly fishing, trout fishing, or even going on the river for walleye. The club officers are Charles Kaese Jr., president, Nick Wyss, vice president, Matt Donnelly, secretary, and Colton Kelty, treasurer, and Mrs. Padua is the advisor and club founder.

The club started in September and local professionals have come in to teach the kids. The local Trout Unlimited chapter has been coming in frequently to teach the art of casting with a fly fishing rod.

Three local tournaments have been held, on Lake LaBarr, Washington Lake and Bodine Lake. Each student paired up with a friend and fished with adults. Each tournament ended with professional weigh-ins. Food was provided by community members and prizes were given to the winners. Members of the ECHS Fishing Club have been on local ice, fishing with professionals sponsored by HT Enterprises. Their first fishing activity took place at Washington Lake in Yulan, NY.

As the club builds experience, its members hope other schools will start fishing clubs, as they want to fish competitively against local schools. The students say that starting a fishing club is a way for kids to have fun as well as a very good opportunity to get outdoors and to interact with each other in a very friendly and relaxing sport.
